Iu the evening the violin contests took phee in the Victoria Hall, with the following results : Violin solo, under twelve (‘Braga’s ‘L« Ser--nata’). —fjianfield Hayes (Trinity Wts 1 van), 1 : Norman Lo Keong, 2 ; Ldmund S uith (Mcrnington Presbyterian), ,‘3. Alai e ■inoeled ; Doris M'Pharscn, Geo. S wan, ('. M'Bride, D. Pvobertson, and Leila Jeffs. The judge remarked that several faults wen apparent, which, of course, were to be looked for in children. For one thing th* op.-ii string was used too largely, one r asun, he 'supposed, being that it was diffi C sit to play with the fourth finger to produce the same cote—it was especially diffi c ill for children. Not much in the way of e cpee-33101) could bo expected from young p epic, but in one or two he found there was a slight tinge of it now and ther which was fairly pleasant to his ear. Violin sob), under cigh'een (SingeleeV 1 Tro -'atore John Wuliac - IMorningtor Prc-byti. ri t), 1; W. Hunter (L-il hj street G mgiegation ■■'), 2; Nelly Fnilvs (Knox), F:ve o’hers »i>tj>>.-• ej. Owing to lie 1 ..t .<> ss of the hour when the Bern was concluded, :.l-,o judge refrained from making coamienta on individual play. He said, hj rwover, that acme of the performers were very much alike in the nature of their perf inn me::, which nude it. difficult for him to decide. He considered the piece chosen was an ambitious one. It contained many technical difficulties, and there was a necessity for a great amount of expression in it, which in most cases was not shown. Strange to sav, the second-priz; winner was the best ii expression—by far the best—but as he was inaccurate iu time and phrasing he lost the honor of premier place. The Hon. G. Jones does not judge by poin s, but takes into consideration the natu r e of the play, weighing well each charaoteriabic.

The violin solo (all nget) and the violin duet (under eighteen) were postponed to Thursday evening at 7.3 U. PHYSICAL EXERCISES. ETC.
