A oorrespodence concerning the merits of the stylo of the crack American jockey “ Todd” Sloan in the London ‘Sportsman has produced sundry references to Antipodean racing and jockeyship. One “ old rider,” who professes to have seen much racing in New Zealand, talks about jockeys in this colony keeping a good hold of their horses’ heads, This, according to another gentleman possessed of similar authority to apeak upon tho matter, is “just exactly what they do not do.” He proceeds to administer the following bitter corrective to New Zealand “jocks’ :“I hare seen jockeys out there turned half round on their horses, in order to get at them better with the whip, and as for having hold of their heads, well, they did have hold of the reins, but that is about all. The English jockey is a good 141b in front of the New Zealand one. Where, I think, we beat the Englishman is at the start. We are quickest away, but from thence to the winning post gva me the Englishman. Jockeyship is at a very low ebb in New Zealand, chiefly owing, I believe, to the fact that when an apprentice wins a few races he is worshipped by the crowd and believes himself an Archer,”
