He hoped the French withdrawal from Fashoda indicated, a recognition of the principle that Egypt must possess the whole of the Nile valley and all the territories previously held by theMahdi. , It was impossible .that the sources of the Nile should be in the hands of an unfriendly Power. Great Britain would not discuss that principle, but was willing to entertain boundary questions and guarantee commercial access to the Nile waterway. Posts which were established. in*the territories formerly under Egyptian rule must be withdrawn. The tactics of France throughout the world had long been habitually directed to embarrassing Great Britain. It was a great mistake to believe that Great Britain would ever yield anything to pressure, and if the Fashoda incident had disabused the minds of persons of this impression it had proved a blessing in disguise;
