A CHARGE OF ARSON.

[Special to tiie Star.]

GORE, October 8

Thomas Baldwin and Ernest William Robson were yesterday committed for trial at Dimedin for arson. The evidence showed that nearly all Robson's furniture, which was insured, was removed to Baldwin's house shortly before the fire. Part of the furniture was hired, and Robson insured as the owner. The fire occurred during the absence of Robson and his wife at Christchurch, Baldwin having charge of the house. Baldwin told the police and others that he lighted fires in the kitchen and parlor the day before the fire, expecting Robson and wife home by the express. He put fresh lignite on at 7 p.m., although the express arrived at 2 p.m. ; besides, the furniture was removed, leaving no accommodation. A witness swore that Robson told him some time before the fire that he intended to insure and remove the furniture, and then burn the house, and on returning after the fire Robson stated that Baldwin made a mess of it. He intended it to go, but not so soon. When leaving for Christchurch Robson told other witnesses that he would return on the 27th September, which he did, three days after Baldwin said he expected him. Detective M'Grath conducted the case for the prosecution. Mr Bowler appeared for Baldwin and Mr Inder for Robson. Both accused reserved their defence. Messrs Andrew Martin and Thomas Green, J.P.s, occupied the bench, and fixed bail for each accused at £3OO and two sureties of £l5O each.

The Mayor of Auckland (Mr Dignan) informed the City Counoil that he will contest the mayoralty against all-oomers.
