HANOVER STREET BAPTIST CHURCH.

In aid of funds for the renovation of the schoolroom of Hanover street Baptist Church a sacred concert was given in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The attendance was not very large, but this was accounted for by the wintry, character of the weather. The Rev. A. North presided. The programme was sustained by members of the church choir, assisted by several outside friends, and was of a varied and attractive character. Miss Sligo, though suffering from a Bore throat, gave a very pleasing rendering of ' The holy shrine'; Mrs Farra sang with much sweetness ' Heavenly rest,' for which she was encored ; and Miss F. Oliver received the same compliment for her solo, ' Wafb her, angels.' Mr G. Martin sang with much acseptance ' Ora pro nobis'; Mr VT. Sinclair was happy in his efforts ' Eternal rest' (encored) and the recitative 'Comfort ye' (' Messiah'); while Mr S. J. Gilbert's fine bass voice was heard to advantage in his number, 'Arm, arm, ye brave' (encored). The Misses Buchanan gave an exceedingly pretty rendering of the duet 'Ruth and Naomi,' which was vigorously applauded, and had to be repeated. The same ladies appeared in a quartet, ' Cast thy burden,' the male parts being taken by Messrs Sinclair and Peters. The other vocal items on the programme were given by the choir. They were well •elected, and were rendered in a manner erhich left little to bedtsred. Of the instrumental items nothing but the highest praise can be bestowed. Mr Moore at the organ and Miss Moore at the pi;uio gave the 4 War March of the Priests' and the ' Hallelujah Chorus' in a finished style, and Miss Moore gave an exceptional treat to the audience by her clever executions on the violin, her two numbers being ' L'Angelus ' and ' Melody in ¥,' encores for both of which were demanded and given. Mr Moore acted as conductor and accompanist, and it was due t.-. his energetic efforts that euch a high-class entertaiument was provided.
