News from West Africa states that the Niger Company will transfer their headquarters to Baruha, the British Government purchasing Akassa. President Kruger is enrolling 50,000 burghers to operate against Nipefu. British residents in the Transvaal refuse to be commandered.
Judge Owen has been appointed to conduct an inquiry into the charges against the New South Wales Minister of Works in connection with the Hastings election. The trial of Lissou, who recently attacked Mordauut, and then killed his sister-in-law, besides seriously injuring his wife and two children, has been commenced. A doctor who saw the prisoner was told by the latter that he was in financial difficulties ; that his life was insured for a large sum, and he therefore endeavored to kill Mordaunt to be hanged, so that his people might receive the insurance money. The evidence for the defence is mainly an endeavor to prove insanity. J. Phillips, the well-known cricket umpire, recently returned from England, is a passenger by the Talune under engagement as a couch to the Christchurch cricketers for this season. He returns to England with the next Australian team. •
The bubonic plague is increasing in Bombay, 4,000 deaths being reported for the week.
