CAIRO, September 9.
A gunboat which proceeded sixty miles up the White Nile sighted 1,000 horsemen galloping southward. Four thousand of Stuart Wortley’s force and the Joalin tribesmen arc in hot pursuit.
A British division marched round Orndurman, and greatly impressed the inhabitants. •
Gunboats are chasing two steamers, which, it is believed, are loaded with the Khalifa’s treasure. (Received September 10. IS9B, at 9.53 a.in.)
Ahmed Fedil, one of the Khalifa’s generals, commands the dervish army of 3,000 at Gadaref. An eye-witness of the death of Gordon states that the latter’s head was exposed on a pole for three days at Omdurman, and the body thrown into the Nile. NEW YORK, September 9.
Mr Chamberlain, in the course of an interview, discussed the results of the capture of Khartoum. He admitted that it was the intention of the British Government to immediately proceed with the construction of the railsvay from Atbara to Khartoum, and probably it would be eventually carried right through the Continent'to join the railway system of Cape Colony. He predicted that this would bo done during the lifetime of the present generation.
