The pathos of the friendship which existed between Mr Gladstone, and 8 r Tbcmw Dyke Acland had a striking illustration in the last days of the faf al illnesses of both. Mr Gladstone, hearing of the Eore Straits of his old friend, dictated a letter to him, in which he prayed for his recovery. Sir Thomas was able, unlike his friend, to write, and so be sent back a letter, in which he assured Mr Gladstone that one of h'• most treasured memories was that of their old days at Oxford. Mr Gladstone was anxious to reply to this letter, but the waning of his strength prevented him from fulfilling his purpose.
