MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The first meeting of the University Debating Society for the second term of the present session was held last evening. The Chairman (Professor Gilray) referred in feeling terms to the loss the University, and especially the Debating Society, had suffered in the death of Mr C. M. Monat. The late Mr Mou'at had been a most popular student, and had never ceased to take an aotive interest in the life of the University. On the motion of Professor Gilray, seconded by Mr J. The prize essay for the year on ' The Disadvantages of a University Education,' by Miss Edith L. Brown, was read by Miss A. Bauohop, and was well received. Professor Gilray read a lengthy report on the essays he.bad received, and offered some criticism on. the views held by the writers. He said that the prize essay was a very interesting one, admirably reasoned out and well expressed, and thoroughly deserving of the prize. During the evening musical items were supplied by Miss A. On Thursday evening DrSiedeberg brought her course of lectures under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Association to a olose. Before dismissal Miss Wilkinson, on behalf of the members of the class, presented the doctor with a mark of their appreoiati n in the form of a real lizard-skin purse, nicely mounted in silver, with a shield on which was engraved : " Presented to Dr Siedeberg by her first St. John Ambulance Nursing Class.
