MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
At the meeting of S*. Paul's x\ssociatioa list night, the president (Veu. Archdeacon Robinson) give two excellent reading*, and Messrs P. Carroll and T. Sawyer reoited favorite selections. Mr Downing sang 'Tiie bugler,' and Mr'Wathen ' True to the last' and ' The gallants of England,' the latter being an eucoto number. The programme for the "gentlemen'.) evening" was arranged by two 1 dies. Mi9S Lo Keoug presided at the pianoforte. At the second winter concert by the Hope of Dunedin Lxlge, 1.0 G T., the programme comprised a duet by Messrs Dickinson and 0. W. Sindeman, songs by Mis 3 Devlin, comic songs by Mr J. Swan (encored), a violin solo by Mr W. Cook, a recitation by Mr Camina (encored), comic songs by Mr Harrison (encored), cornet solo by Mr Dickinson, a dialogue by Messrs Smith and Finlay«on, and an address by Mr R. Clark. Mrs Oore acted as accompanist. At the fortnightly mee'.ing of the Linda Rebekah Lodge, 1.0.0. F., on Friday, the balance-sheet for the half-year ended June was presented, and Bhowcd that the finances of the lodge are in a very healthy condition. During the evening several musical selections were given by members of the lodge. The Lily of the Valley Lodge, 1.0.G.T , last received official visits from all the lodges in the district, also from Port Chalmers and Mosgiel. About :JUO assembled. At the opening meeting addresses were delivered by Bro. Merry and G. S. Cameron. Violin and piano soloj were contributed by Bros. Blath and Himmeliespeotively ; Bongs by Miss Lorimer, Messrs Park, J. M'Connell (encored), G. Sandeman, J. M'Kay (encored), while Messrs Mills and Dunn gave recitationr. B:o. Himmel aHed as accompanist. For the visiting lodges the C.T-8 of th-i following replied :—Pioneer, Hope of Dunedin, Star of Freedom, Hope of Caversham, Alliance, All Nations (Port Chalmers), and Anchor of Hope (Mosgiel). At the fortnightly meeting of the Antidote D vi ion Sons and Daughters of Temperance (Bro. James Marshall in the chair) one candidate was initiated. After routine business Bro3. G. W. Crawford and Hannah contributed to the amusement of the members.
At the weekly meeting of the Dundas street Literary and Dtbaiiug Society Mr D. Foster delivered a lecture on 'Phrenology, ita Uses and Teachings.' At the close if his remarks, wh:ch were illustrated by means of numerous blackboard drawings, etc., Mr Foster was, on the motion of Mr M. Cable, accorded a hearty vote of thanks. At the ordinary meeting of the Dunedin corps of the St. Johu Ambulioce Brigade at the Central Fire Brigade Station on Monday evening the honorary surgeon (Dr Closs) delivered an interesting leetuie, taking up the subject of 'Wounds.' The lecturer succeeded in placing before his audience many important facts in connection with wounds and their treatment, and at the conclusion of bis address he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, upon the motion of the superintendent.
At the fortnightly meeting of Unity Lodge, 1.0.0.F , in tho Friendly Societies' Hal!, South Dunedin (N.G. Bro. C. H. Brooks presiding) the principal business was the consideration of the report of the Committee appointed to inquire into the advisability of opening a Rebekah Lodge. The report presented waß favorable, and the Committee urged the lodge to lose no time in forming the proposed lodge. The report was warmly approved and adopted. Considerable discussion took place, and D. D G. M. Bro. PattiaoD, of Linda Rebekah Lodge, greatly assisted by explaining to some extent the working of the institution. It was decided to hold a public meeting for the purpose of starting the lodge. Ail the members present signed the petition to the Grand Lidge asking for a charter. D.D.G.M. Bro. Pattison and N.G. Bro. Burt (Leith) responded to the toast to the visitors. The evening'* receipts were £lO 9* Id.
