[Pub Press Association.—Copyright.]

LONDON, September 3. Percy Cavil}, of Sydney, beat Russell, the Scotch champion swimmer, over a quarter of a mile by 25yds. The match took place at Glasgow. Russell got the better of the start, but at fifty yards it was a neck and neck race. At the end of the first hundred yards Cavill led by syds. At four hundred yards Cavill had ■increased his lead to 20yds, and eventually won by 25yds, the time being 6min 13sec. TURF CHIT CHAT. [By The Admiral.] The privileges for the Hunt Club meeting were disposed of to r day as follows Grand stand booth, George Green, £l6; booths Nos. 2 and 3, outside, Miss Dwyer, £7 and £6 ; fruit stalls, £1 each, Elliott; stabling, Carson, 10s. Owners are reminded that acceptances for Saturday’s races are due to-night. A number of letters have been received by the Committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club from persons disqualified for tote betting on the Forhury racecourse, who promised not to offend in future. At the, last Committee meeting these were considered, and a sub-committee appointed to go through the names at present on the black list. I understand that at the next monthly meeting, to he held on the 23rd inst., 'the sub-oom-mittee will recommend about forty names be removed, and others will depend on their behaviour at the Hunt Club meeting. Euroolydon and Mountebank have been scratched for all engagements at the Hunt Club meeting. “Malua,” in the 'Taieri Advocate/ says that a'strong feeling prevails among a large circle of those interested that the D.J.O. Committee should not take on themselves the filling of the vacancies, but: that a general • meeting of members should be called for the purpose. The fact of there being two appointments to make at one time, a rather unusual occurrence, is held to be sufficient justification for holding a meeting of all members. ■ At the Mentone (Victoria) meeting, held on the 10th ult., the New Zealand hack Garrick, with 7.12 up, captured the Flying Handicap of five and a-half furlongs. The field comprised eight runners, the Tim Whiffler gelding reaching the post a head to the good. He started second favorite, his price being 4to 1 against. The time occupied on the journey was Imin S^seo.

, The monthly meeting of the Committee of tfie Bavenabourne Boating Club was held last night in the boatahed, when all the members were present. The resignation of Mr O; Holler as secretary of the club was accepted with regret. Mr H. B. Holier was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy, and Mr C. Snrth was elected on the Committee. After having transacted a large amount of business fifteen new members were elected.

The football match: Wanganui Collegiate School and Wellington College, played at Christchurch yesterday, v was won by the latter by 8 points to 5. Wellington scored two tries, one of which was converted, and Wanganui one try, which was converted. The Wellington forwards ran over the others in the scrums, but the Wanganui forwards were smarter in the loose work. The game was all forward, being played in heavy rain.
