Cargo for Dunedin ex s.s. Walmate, from London, will come down, by the Te Anan. Mr Naismith, late of the Monowal, has Joined the Moana as chief steward. Intimation was received'by cable on Saturday to the effect that the Admiralty had resolved upon sending the cruiser Mohawk for a commission on the Australian' station. The Mohawk is a third class cruiser, and is evidently intended to replace' one of the obsolete, cruisers, the Pylades, Rapid, or Royalist, which are being withdrawn. The Mohawk is built of steel, and is of 1,770 tons displacement, with an indicated horse-power of 3,500. She was built at Glasgow,- and launched in KS6. Her engines are by Thomson, and her armament consists of six 6in breech-loading guns, besides eight three-pounder quick-firing pieces And two . machine guns. The, Mohawk is also provided with three tubes for the.discharge of torpedoes. She is capable of attaining a speed of 164 knots, and her complement of men is 172. She cost .£87,583. New Zealand freights were 20c to 21c.

A singular coincidence !n the last two trips of the ship Merinerus,_ which has just arrived at Melbourne, was provided. On both occasions she left Loudon on • the same' day of the week, and, excepting the calendar dates, she passed the Cape on the same day, the Leeuwin the same day, and entered the Heads on the same day on both passages, recording the same time of seventy-eight days to an hour.

THE MISHAP TO THE MONOWAI. When proceeding up the Bluff Harbor at dead low water on Friday morning, and when right in the fair way, the Monowai, drawing 19ft, very lighly touched some abject. So light was the touch that but little notice was taken of the, circumstance. Whan at the Bluff wharf, however, it was reported that water was finding its way into the stokehole. A diver was sent down, and located the leak on the port side of the ship and about 4ft. from the keel. A temporary patch was put on and the steamer proceeded to Port Chalmers. There she was put into the graving dock on Saturday night. It was then ascertained that the vessel had been pierced by a sharp-pointed rock and a hole 6in by 4in made. The hole was very clean, and there was no appearance of any scraping, the steamer evidently having risen on to it in passing. The slight damage was quickly repaired, and the Monowai was floated out of the graving dock yesterday.afternoon. At the time of the mishap, as has been stated, the Monowai was in mid-channel. The Union- Steam Ship Company have written to the Bluff Harbor Board, bringing under their notice the circumstances of the mishap, and impressing upon them the necessity of keeping the channel way free from all dangers. • - ■ MOVEMENTS OF UNION S.S.
