WORK AND WAGES.
A meeting of the Board of .Conciliation, under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, is to he held at Auckland on the 23rd inst. for the purpose of investigating a dispute between the Auckland branch of the Federated Seamen’s Union of New Zealand and the Northern Steamship Company, Captain A. M‘Gregor, Captain Shaw, Messrs Leyland and O’Brien, and Captain Budwood. The Board, which will sit for the first time in Auckland, consists of the Rev. Mr Burgess (chairman), Messrs J. J. Holland, M.H.R., J. M. Shera, Lucas (Thames), and Fawcus. The question to decide is a dispute as to wages. A Wellington firm of drapers were charged yesterday with a breach of the Shop Assistants Act with having employed a shop assistant to deliver goods half an hour later than the prescribed time of closing. The shop assistant in question was the son of the carrier who contracted to deliver the defendant’s goods, and it was contended that the defendants were not liable under the Act. The case was a test one, and the magistrate, in dismissing it, said he could not unduly strain the interpretation of the statute, .
At the annual meeting of the Dunediii Builders’ Association the following gentlemen were appointed officers for the ensuing year President, Mr G. Clark j vice-presi-dent, Mr R. Crawford ; secretary, Mr G. Simpson ; treasurer, Mr J. M'Gill; committee—Meaara George, Lunn, and Milnea j auditors, Messrs Foster and Ahum. It Was decided to hold the annual dinner at the European Hotel on Friday evening next, when a very large gathering of architects, builders, and allied trades is expected.
