CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

♦ A meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday, and attended by Mr G. L. Denniston (president), Messrs A. C. Begg, D. E. Theomin, J. M. Gallaway, T. R. Fisher, and J. Moloney. Further correspondence was received from the Sydney Chamber with regard to the question of bills of lading, with a report from their Committee as to the suggestions of the London Chamber at the recenc conference. —lt was resolved to reply that this Chamber agree that the matter can only be dealt ■with by legislative action; copies of the correspondence with the London Chamber to be forwarded to the Sydney Chamber. The Sydney Chamber also wrote intimating that the proposed conference of Australasian Chambers had been postponed till the middle of May on account of the Federal Conference. They also forwarded a copy of the suggested agenda paper.—lt was decided to act with the other chambers in the colony, and suggest that the chambers should combine in paying the expenses of a joint delegate to represent this colony at the Sydney Conference. - The London Chamber again wrote with reference to the question of damage to hides, at the same time introducing Mr Charles Rocke, of London, to the Dunedin Chamber. Mr Rocke exhibited two photographs illustrating the damage caused to hides by ill flaying.—The Committee thanked Mr Rocke and resolved to again draw the attention of the public to the serious loss occasioned by the carelessness displayed in flaying, and to have the photographs hung in the chamber hall. A letter was received from tradesmen and manufacturers at Palmerston North stating that a meeting of local tradesmen bad been held with regard to the interference by Government officials, chiefly in the Defence Department, with manufacturers by importing goods free of duty and selling them in competition with those on which duty was paid. They urged that a petition should be drawn up in connection with the matter for presentation to Parliament.—lt was decided to reply to the effect that before taking action in so serious a matter the Committee wonld require further details as to the alleged practice.
