MINING NOTES. A RICH DISCOVERY. The Dunedin Stock Exchange received the following wire to-day from Reefton:—' Solid reef found Lord Brassey claim, Victoria Range. Proved eight feet wide, carrying splendid gold.' While in Dunedin last week Mr H. A. Gordon (of the Anglo-Continental Syndicate) and Mercer (of the K.G. Exploration Company) purchased the option of the Barewood Quartz Mining Company s property and Robert Lees's property adjoining. The price is £33,000 in cash and shares. Mr Gordon, before leaving, appointed Mr John Gow, late inspector of mines, as local representative of the Anglo-Continental Syndicate. WOOL FREIGHTS. As will be seen in another column, the New Zealand Shipping Company announce a considerable reduction in the rates of freight to London on wool. This reduction will be very gratifying to shippers of our staple product, being Jd per lb lower than the rates of freight hitherto ruling. POST OFFICE NOTICES. Mails close at the Chief Post Office, Dunedin (subject to any necessary alterations), as under:— Overland, North, daily, 10.30 a.m. Late letters, guard's van, 11 a.m. Friday, February 19. For Lvttelton, ChristchurCh, and Northern Ports. —Per Te Anau, at 3.20 p.m. Late letters, 0.P.0., at 3.30 p.m.
Mails for Raratonga and Tahiti, perUpoln, will close at Auckland on Friday, 19th February, at Mails for New Hebrides leave Sydney on the 24thinst -- ' , _, , , t., Mails leave Sydney for New Guinea on March 1, and for Noumea and Fiji on March 3. Mails for Fiji, per Richmond, will close at Auckland on Friday, March 5, at 4 p.m. _ Mails for Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji, per Taviuni, will close at Attckland on Wednesday, 10th March, at 4n.ro. Note —The rates of postage on newspapers addressed to Queensland, as from the Ist January, 1897, must be Id for first 4oz or less, and id for every additional 2oz.
