turf chit chat. [By Tab Admiral.] The Wellington Cnp candidate Leda had to be spelled after the M*sterton meeting till last week owing to an internal com?, plaint. She must therefore race big this month, and her chance for the Cup must necessarily be prejudiced. Petroline'B running at the late Wairarapa meeting was under the review of the stewards of the local racing club on Tuesday, more especially after her subsequent performance at Pauiatua, when the following resolution was passed^ —"That the stewards consider the riding and, running of Petroline in the Trial Hack Race at Tauherenikau on the l3t was most unsatisfactory, but that there is not sufficient evidence to suspend the rider." Afterwards the jockey who role Petrolinc at Tauherenikau waa silled in and cautioned. The principal weights for the Takapuna Cup, one mile and a-half, to be run on the 29ih inst, are .- St. Kdda 9 10, Fabulist 9 7, Nestor 9 2. Pounamn made his first appearance in England on November 10. Carrying 12 0, and ridden by Hickey, he finished last in the Sutton Hurdle Race, of 72 sovs, two miles, decided at the Birmingham November meeting. He was not mentioned in the betting. Levanter has started five times in steeplechases run over tho Ellerslie course, and his record is : Won three, run second once, and once unplaced. Now that the difficulty with the South Island Trotting Association is temporarily tided over, tho Tahuna Park Trotting Club' have issued a programme for their meetiDg on February 26 and March 3. In the two days £395 will be given in stakes. The. principal events arc: —Tahuna Cup, of 50 sovs, two miles, and President's Handicap, of 35 sovs, two miles —both saddle events. Mahaki was list week advertised to be submitted to auction under bill of sale. ■ Mr Quinlivan, sen., is to train for Mr Rathbone in future. Missfire must be a greatly improved torse since he ran first in Dnuedin. Mr Curtis's representative will probably be inquired for by backers for the Publicans' Handicap next month. The New Zealand Bowling Association, to which the Various Southern clubs are affiliated, have arranged to hold a tournament at Cbristchurch from the l3t to the sth of February inclusive, and following the Exhibition tournament under the auspices of the Northern Bowling Association at Wellington. It is probable that a numbsr of the players, both local and visiting, takirig part in the Wellington Tournament, which begins on the 25th inst. and finishes on the 29ih, will go on to Cbristchurch. The programme mapped out by the Southern Association is shortly as follows:—First day, inter-club matches ; second day, Rink Tournament and Champion Doubles (if there are vacant greens); third day, continuation of Champion Doubles and commencement of Champion Singles, and as many tics to be played off as can be arranged; fifth day, all ties to be completed, fiuals played off, all inter-club matches, e'.c , may be arranged. The prizes consist of certificates and gold medals for the first and second teams in the rink tournament; trophies valued at £2 10s and £2 for each pUyer iu the first and second teams in the Cinmpion Doubles; a gold medal and certificate to the winner of the Champion Singlep, a pair of silvermounted bowls and certificate as a second prize, and a pair of ivory-mounted bowls and certificate as third priz\ CR CKET. ■» . QUEENSLAND v. ASHBURTON. The match Queensland v. Ashburton and South Canterbury was concluded yesterday. Ashburton made 142, and Queensland, who had made 205 in their first innings, rapidly put up 131, but their wiokets also fell rapidly. Ashburton's second innings was a funeral procession, 71' being the total, of which H. W. Moore (who has repeatedly represented Canterbury in interprovincial matches) made 30.
