CYCLING.
Mr Bowman, of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, Christchurch, set out on Tuesday with tbs intention of endeavoring to lower the Cbristchnrch-Donedin record of twenty-four hours, held by j. 0. Shetland, of Christchurch. Leaving Christchurch On Tuesday; at 10 a.m., and, although missing his road and thus losing an hour near Ashburton, he arrived at Oamaru in the quick time of fifteen hours and a-half. Starting from Oamaru at 2 a.m. yesterday, and with eight hours in which to do the distance, he made good time until on the Horse Range, where he met a heavy south-west gale and downpour of rain, which, although feeling fresh and strong, compelled him to give it up. There is not the least doubt but that Bowman, under ordinary conditions, would have succeeded in coming through in about twenty-two hours; but, not being satisfied with this attempt, he will again make another start, this time from Dunedin, leaving the Post Office at 2 p.m. to-morrow.
