The Evening Star FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1895.

Frederick Roberts alias Keeper was arrested at Wellington yesterday on a charge of forgery committed at Dunedin. He was remanded to appear here on Tuesday next. In a case at the Police Court this morning, wherein a young man was charged with stealing money Irom a hotel, Mr Hanlon, counsel for the defence, referred to the absurdity of the Act in compelling the justices to send a prisoner for trial simply because he committed a theft in a dwelling. It did not matter how much an article was valued at, the Bench could not deal with the case. If a person stole a button from a dwelling the magistrate was bound to commit the prisoner for trial. The annual congregational meeting of tin Green Islaud Presbyterian Church was held on WedueaUy evening. The report of the Session showed that Messrs William Highet and John Graham had been elected members of the Session, and Messrs John Gray, Robert Hcrbison, and Archibald M'Kinlay deacons. The Session regreltcd that Mr James Kuklaud still unable, -through indisposition, to fulfil his duties as deacon. The roll of membership showed a total of 17i3, being an increase of nine on the previous year. The choir continued to do its work in a very efficient manner. The financial report showed a credit balance of £9 odd. At the conclusion of the meeting the Rev. D. Dutton gavo an astronomioal lecture. The General Committee of the approaching Juvenile Industrial Kxhibkion held a meeting last evening, when several subcommittees reported progress. The Decoration Committee stated what arrangements they had made, and the Platform and Musical Committee reported the receipt so far of over 200 entries for the musical contests, with returns from fourteen schools yet to come. The Committee who have charge of the floral and banner display said that the children (under the charge of Mr Manson) were making good progress. It was announced aho that Mr L. A. Line, M.A., had kindly consented to act as judge of the spelling bee, aud it was decided to open the Exhibition both afternoon and evening during the season. There is a nice row going on in musical circles in Melbourne over Lord Brassey's reception. The Government left the Minister of Works (Mr Taverner) a free hand, and he appears to have delegated his powers to a Mr E. Miller, a well-paid postal official, who, being secretary of the Melbourne Royal Liedertafel, was naturally anxious to secure for his society the £IOO voted for the musical part of the programme. But there are other and much older musical organisations in Melbourne, aud the members of the Melbourne Philharmonic Society and the Liedertafel took umbrage at having been passed over. They were prepared to have given their services gratuitously rather than be denied a place in this State function. A strong point was made against the " Royal' Liedertafel,"who pleaded the "low state" of their lunds as a reason why they could not pay the standard fee to the members of the orchestra, though in receipt of £IOO of public money, and this action was pretty freely denounced as "sweating." Then the Royal Liedertafel put up their backs and declared that they would not perform if any other musical organisation were asked to assist. Evidently Mr Taverner has made a lovely muddle.

Mr E. G. Allen will be a candidate for the Port Chalmers mayoralty.
