BRIEF MENTION.

The Wellington Corporation have decided to erect a market for produce, both wholesale and retail. At present the building will be of a temporary character. The central Otago bands intend holding a contest shortly. It is expected that the Cromwell, Naseby, Roxburgh, Matakanui, Bannockburn, and Nevis bands will take part. Victoria is prohibiting the importation of swine from New Zealand.

Mr Myles B. Foster, the representative of the London Trinity College of Music, finished his Dunedin work yesterday, and left to-day for Queenstown. At a meeting of the Transit Commission in Sydney an application was received from a Chinaman for a cabman's license. One member of the Commission said: "I will resign my seat at once if a license is granted to a Chinaman." Another commissioner followed suit, and the upshot was that th license was refused.

An old settler has passed away in Mr H. C. Daniell, for many years Commissioner of Crown Lands at Nelson. He was originally clerk to the New Zealand Company, and wound up the affairs of that body. He then passed into the service of the General Government, and went into the Land Department under Major Richmond. The Great Western Railway Company made an agreement many years ago with a refreshment contractor at Swindon Junotion that all trains should stop ten minutes at Swindon to permit passengers to patronise his wares. He was to erect refreshment rooms, a site being leased to him by the company at the nominal rental of one penny
