CANTERBURY TIMES' ON OLD NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON PAST AND PRESENT. Wellington from 1839 to 1895. The Proprietors of the ' Canterbury Times' have pleasure in intimating that arrangements are now complete for the issue of a Special Wellington Number of that popular weekly journal. This Special Illustrated Number will be published on THURSDAY, 24th OCTOBER, and, in order to ensure getting copies of it, the Public are requested to give their orders at once to their local agent or bookseller, or to order direct from the Office. As the Settlement founded at Port Nicholson in 1839 was the first systematic effort to colonise New Zealand, the story of the struggles and successes of the Pioneer Settlers is really the history of the eariy days of New Zealand. The subject is treated in popular' style, and the article, while avoiding political topics, will be found to give many interesting details of life in the early days. AmoJJg the subjects dealt * ith are:—The Early Settlers, Pakeba and Maori, A Pioneer's Troubles, Life in Wellington in 1841, A Model Missionary, Early Officials and Offices, The First Municipal Corporation, The Fire of 1842, Municipal Improvements and Progress, Wellington An 1867, The "Father" of Wellington, The Manawatu Railway, Wellington To-day, etc. The Number will contain a Relection of Beautifully Executed Engravings, of which the following is a list:—Hon. Martin, Sir W. Fox, Colonel Wakefield, Bishop Hadfield, Dr Featherstone. Hon. Mantell. Mr F. G. Crawford, and Mr Plimmer; Port Nicholson in 1846 (embodied in heading), Banks of the Hutt near Mr Molesworth's Farm, Paramata Pah (Porerua), Makaenuka Pah (Hutt district), Petone Pah, Pipitea Point, Fort Richmond and the Hutt bridge, Barrett's Hotel (Wellington). Thorndon, Te Aro, Port Nicholson 1842, Wellington (modern view), Petone road, Porerua Bay. - Notwithstanding the great labor and outlay involved in preparing this special number, it will he issued at the ordinary price. All interested in the early history of the colony are, therefore, enabled to obtain a copy of the OLD WELLINGTON NUMBER of the ' Canterbury Times' from all Booksellers and Newsvendors, Railway Bookstalls, and Newspaper Runners throughout the colony. On OCTOBER 31 will be commenoed a New Sensational Story dealing with the Eablt Convict Days of Tasmania. The story, which will be illustrated, is entitled 'PEARGE'S PLOT,' and is founded on fact, being written up from the diary and correspondence of an old colonist. It gives a realistic picture of the terrible tragedies that make up the history of Yan Diemen's Land in the early part of the present century, when the colony was a penal settlement for British convicts. IT. GEORGE JAM.—Selected Fruit and Best Sugar. All Grocers. I SORE Legs, Burns, Bruißes, Irritating Erup-1 tions positively dured with Spring Blossom I Ointment, 6d and Is. Everywhere. '
