GOOD-BYE!
"Good-bye!" How oft the words are lightly spoken, With smile-wreathed lips and merry, laughing eyes, Forgetful of their sweet and tender meaning, The richer blessing that beneath them lies. " Good-bye," we whisper gently to the dying, As in our grief we kneel beside the bed, And watch the dear eyes close, the breath grow fainter, And one more loved is numbered with the dead. " Good-bye," we say with heartache to the living. And hands are clasped, while hearts are rent in twain. And then a dreary blank—our sun has set. And earthly happiness—an empty name. For earth has partings, death were kinder far, When hopes .long cherished end in tearless moan, And yet the heart lives on amid its anguish, Henceforth to wait and watch—alone, alone. Good-byes are ever ringing in our ears, Their dreaded accents on the spirit pall; We know not who may utter them the next, How soon their shadows on our hearts may fall. 0 for the sweet reunions above, In that blest home where partings are unknown ; 0 for the Friend who never says "Good-bye" To those who love and claim Him as their own. E. H. Harrison.
