THE GREAT RAILWAY RACE.
Now that the great railway race from London to Aberdeen is ended for the season (says an exchange), it may be of interest to place on record the highest speeds attained on the rival West and East Coast routes. The Caledonian and Northwestern succeeded in making the run —540 miles—in 512min, or an average speed of slightly over 62 miles an hour, including stoppages; the North British and East Coast, with the less mileage of 524 A miles iu 521min, including stoppages, which gives an average speed of 60.40 miles per hour. These speeds are much ahead of anything regularly done in America. The highest speeds attained on the West Coast route were between Penrith and Carlisle eighteen miles when the train covered the distance at the rate of seventytwo miles an hour, aud between Beattock Summit and Symington at the rate of sixtyeight miles per hour. On the East Coast route the highest speeds attained were between Newcastle and Berwick—sixty-eight miles—which was covered at the rate of 67i miles an hour; and in Scotland between Berwick and Edinburgh, at the rate of sixty-four miles an hour."
It may also be interesting to give the actual times of arrival at Aberdeen from July 29 to August 22 inclusive, of the West and East Coast eight o'clock night express trains from Eustou and King's Cross respectively.
From these figures it appears that with two exceptions the West Coast'train has been the first to reach Aberdeen, and that with the West Coast route remains the credit for the "record" run achieved by their train on the 22nd inst.
We add the following analysis of mileage and speed, revised so as to cover the record runs on each route: —
Total distance run, 524£ miles. Time taken (ineluding stoppages), 521 minutes. Average speed, 60.40 miles an hour.
