MELBOURNE NEWS. MELBOURNE, October 19. It is a beautiful early-summer day for the continuation of the Caulfield meeting. Last evening betting became very spirited at the Victorian Club Rooms. Hopscotch maintained his position in the Cup quotations, but Hova was knocked back to 100 to 10 offered, and Preston became second favorite, 200 to 22 being eventually taken about him. Most of the business transacted was over Admiral After 1,500 to 90 had been taken all the 100 to 8 and 9 was exhausted, and 100 to 10 was finally accepted. Other wagers were 1,000 to 80 Bruin, 2,000 to 150 Atlas, 1,000 to 40 Newman, 2,500 to 30 Toreador, 1,500 to 20 Bradford, 1,000 to 10 Chesterman. All the offers of 100 to 5 Hova for the Melbourne Cup were accepted. Hova has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup. Hayes rides The Admiral. MAIDEN PLATE. The Press Association's correspondent fancies that the Caulfield Cup lies between Admiral, Bruin, and Trenchant, with Newman the best outsider.
Nominations for several races (including trots) at the D.J.C. spring meeting close this evening. The Roslyn Bowling Club formally opened their season this afternoon, but as the ground was wet no games were played. The Kaituna Club also opened their season this afternoon.
