WELLINGTON, Aucrsx 0. Railway Contracts.
The Carriers’ Union of Christchurch have petitioned asking that the present system of railway carriage, under which contracts arc let by one tender in each of the four centres for a period of three years, be abolished. The Railway Committee, after taking evidence, passed a resolution that they could not see their way to accept the request of the petitioners, and advised them to enrol as a separate body and tender in that capacity, sub-letting where necessary. An Otago Itcnnion.
The gathering last night ot Otagons (past and present), under the presidency of Mr Pinkerton, was a thorough success.
