Goldsbrough, Mqrt, and Co.’s Committee propose that unpaid calls, should carry 4 per cent, instead of 8 per cent. Mr Alex. Young considers that the company may rely on an income of £IOO,OOO yearly. The Committee of the City of Melbourne Bank recommend depositors to adopt the amended scheme put forward at the meeting on July 6. It is reported that the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain is moving for the appointment of a committee to consider the construction of a Pacific cable.

It is currently reported at Constantinople that the Khedive has presented the Sultan with half a million sterling in order to enlist the sympathy of Turkey in the Egyptian question. Baron Dhanis, military commander in the Congo, states that Great Britain and France combined could easily dislodge the Mahdi and free the European prisoners he now ha?. The English will abandon the Chitral country west of Ganjakora. Seven thousand troops hold the route from Peshawur through to Dir, pending a final settlement. A colliery in Ardrossan, Scotland, was flooded and fourteen persons drowned. The Taitapu Gold Company of New Zealand has bceu launched, with a capital of £175,000. Shares amounting to £125,000 are offered to the public, and this sum has been subscribed.

The steamer Echuca, from Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, has arrived at Suez with eight head of cattle alive. The sheep have carried well. The Turkish Government has decided to apply its own Armenian scheme of reform to the whole of the Empire. Forests on Beaver Island, at the north part of Lake Michigan, have been destroyed by fire and hundreds of lives lost. Cholera is prevalent in Southern Russia, and upwards of 100 deaths have been recorded.

In connection with the Abrahams’ case in Melbourne, William Sowell, who was acting as sheriff’s custodian of the property, was arrested on a charge of stealing from the stock. When the case was called in the court it was announced that be had committed suicide that morning by shooting himself.

Messrs Crick ami Meagher, members of the New South Wales Parliament, and counsel for the defence in the Dean case, are suing the Premier for £2,000 damages for libel alleged to be contained in a speech made at Newcastle referring to their connection with the case.
