THE COURTS—TO-DAY.

CITY POLICE COURT. (Before E. H. Carew, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness. —One first offender was convicted and discharged. Unlawfully Diverting Water. —Henry Walton Phillips was charged with having, on the 9th day of February, unlawfully connected a pipe with a pipe leading from the , waterworks of tho Corporation of Dunedin, through the premises' of oho Munro, adjoining his own premises, whereby his own supply of water, was improperly increased. Mr Chapman appeared for the Corporation, and Mr Solomon tor accused.— Edward Howliaoh, clerk in the water department,.gave evidence in this adjourned case.—Mr Solomon submitted that the'ease should have been brought as a breach of the by-laws, not as a criminal offence at all. There was no evidence whatever of guilty intent.—His Worship convicted defendant, and fined him £5 and costs (645). —Two other ‘informations were withdrawn, i Nicholas Ungherer was charged with suffering a pipe to remain connected with the City water works so that his supply was improperly increased. Mr Chapman for the Corporation; Mr Solomon for defendant.— After evidence the case was dismissed, with professional costs to defendant of £2 2s. — Two other cases against the same defendant were withdrawn.

Maintenance. —John Campbell, of Berwick, was charged with failing to keep up payments towards the support of his illegitimate child.—A sentence of ten days* imprisonment was recorded. John Body was charged by Christina M'Donald with being the father of her illegitimate child, and neglecting to maintain said child.—Ordered’to pay 5s a week. Thomas Gubbins was charged with failing to provide for the support of his illegitimate child.—Adjudged father of the child and ordered to pay 4s a week.
