ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Francis Ward, of Port Albert (Auckland), committed suicide by hanging. Captain Summers, of the Lochnagar, which arrived at Lyttelton from Nehon yesterday, reports the death of F. de Vere, a Nelson publican. It is stated that De Vere, who had an extensive knowledge of the coast, was taken on board to assist in navigating the vessel to Lyttelton. The barque left on June 24, and on the 26th De Vere showed signs of mental derangement. A strict watch was kept over him, but though he improved temporarily l:e died on the evening of June 28, when the vessel was between Stephens Island and The Brothers. The body was buried at sea The ship was becalmed for some time, and it was impossible to shape for Wellington for medical assistance.
From a Wellington telegram we learn that William Johnston, a shepherd, aged fifty years, employed on Mr Tully's run at Martinborough, was found dead yesterday. Joseph Sharpies, an employe of the Roslyn Woollen Mills, while at work this morning, injured one of the fingers of his left hand very painfully. It was attended to at the Hospital, after which the man returned to his home.
