THE KIEL CANAL.

BERLIN, June 20. Brilliant festivities were held at Hamburg in connection with the opening of the Kiel Canal. The Emperor of .Germany, King of Saxony and Wurtemburg, Dukes of York and Saxe-Coburg were among those present. The, Kaiser declared that the_ presence of navies representing the various nations was a pledge of peace. Rain marred what would have been a wonderful display of fireworks.. The French authorities exhibit a churlish attitude at Kiel, the crews of their warships not being permitted to land or accept the hospitality extended to them. Nearly 100 warships of different nations were assembled.

The Russians, being desirous of taking part in the mourning ceremony on the occasion of the anniversary of M. Carnot’s assassination (June 27), their ships will leave Kiel in company with the French ships, and the vessels will sail with flags lowered at half-mast, out of respect to the deceased President.

The Kaiser’s speech at the opening of the canal was peaceful i u tone. ° The Imperial yacht Hohenzollern headed the procession through the canal at four o’clock amidst cheers. Unlike those of other nationst the French officers refused to accept hospitality aboard the German ships.

PARIS, June 19. It is said that Paris residents-are much annoy ed at the bands of the British worships in Kiel playing ‘The watch on the Rhine.’ [Special to Pres& Association,] HAMBURG, June 20. At the banquet the Emperor said that the opening of the canal would serve the cause of peace, and that the presence of the fleets there assembled was a sign that Europe would co-operate to maintain' friendly relations. . Despite the stormy weather 50,000 persons, who had assembled outside the banquet hall, stood for a long time saluting and loudly cheering the guests. BERLIN, June 20. ■ Crowds were waiting at Kiel all night iq order to get good places-to view the ceremony. The military band played the National Anthem when the line acrqsgthe water was broken, and the, Kaiser bowed to the spectators with visible emotion.
