ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

At the Voting Women's Christian Association Rooms, Moray place, yesterday afternoon, a course of "first aid" lectures to women was commenced by Dr Closs. There was a large demand for tickets, the applications exceeding the number available for issue, and as a consequence some must have been disappointed. The lecturer gave a general description of the human skeleton, explaining the workings of the muscular and nervous systems and the circulation and respiration, the whole being illustrated by means of the new diagrams recently imported by the Association. Miss A. H. Logie is the class secretary. The second lecture of the course will be held on Thursday afternoon next.

A meeting of the Committee of the newlyformed nursing corps was held on Monday evening, all the members being present. A set of rules was prepared for submission to the next meeting of members of the corps, and it was decided to take steps for the appointment of a president and two vicpresidents. Members will be pleased to learn that Dr Barnett has consented to accept the position of honorary surgeon to the corps. An evening course of first aid lectures to women will bo commenced on Thursday next, for which the Committte have been fortunate enough to secure Dr Brown's services as lecturer. Tickets can now be procured, and those- clearing them should make

early application, as it is intended to limit the number attending the class. It is expected that a branch of the St. John Ambulance Association will be formed at Milton during the present season. At the Central Fire Brigade Station, Octagon, Dr Smith last evening delivered the second of his course of ambulance lectures to men. The subject was • Hemorrhage,' and included a description of the blood vessels, with instructions as to where the circulation could be arrested either by digital pressure or by the application of a tourniquet; how to improvise the latter ; and the distinguishing between the various kinds of bleeding. Some instruction in the use of the triangular bandage followed. At tha rccetit Easter volunteer encampment at Auckland the local corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was, by permission of the defence authorities, permitted to take part. The corps was under the charge of the hon. surgeon (Dr Dawson) and of the superintendent, and the members not only acquired a considerable amount of knowledge from their practices, but were able to render services both in firdt aid work and in the camp hospital. The Hillsido Workshops branch of the St. John Ambulance Association commenced its fourth season on Wednesday night, when Dr M'Kellar delivered the first of a scries of , lectures on ' First Aid to the Injured.' The lecture was of the usual introductory nature, and was devoted principally to a physiological description of the body. It will be continued on Wednesday next. Mr It. A branch of the Association is being formed at Ravuijbourne. *
