WELLINGTON, May Hi.
The Lands Department recently proposed to Jet the islands in the Waitaki for the purpose of keeping down the rabbits, with whiuh they were infested. Small settlers along the course of the river have been in the habit of running cattle on these islands, ami would rather pay a moderate rental than lose their pasturage. Representations were made on their behalf by Mr \V. Steward and Mr Duncan, M.H.R,.s, and meanwhile the islands are withdrawn to enable some arrangements to be made. CHRLSTCIIUItUH, May 10. At the Police Court John Nixon, a prohibited person, was lined £lO or three months for buying a glass of beer. The landlord of the hotel where the beer was procured was charged with selliug the same, but the case was dismissed on the giound of want of identification. Florence Irne Kempleman, charged with stealing a fur boa of the value of £7 from th-3 steamer Takapuna, was remanded to appear at Wellington on Wednesday. At the inquest on a lire by which a store was burned down at Scfton last week the jury returned a verdict of " Wilfully set on tire by some person unknown."
