VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

The Dunedin Engineers paraded at the Garrison Hall last evening, and after inspection were told off for the various branches of class work. The muster was : Captain Beal, Lieutenant Barclay, 1 sergeant-major, 1 buglemajor, 1 quarter-master, 5 sergeants, 3 corporals, 1 bugler, 52 privates ; total, 6(5. The corps has recently added to its plant a supply of timber suitable for indoor use in the construction in the various forms of military bridges, 'and the engineering squad were instructed in the building of both single ant] double-lock bridges, the sections being laid oi)t and the frames marked off and lashed and afterwards launched, and the bridge put together in very good time. After parade a meeting was held, when Captain Beal nominated Mr R. 11, Postlcthwaite for the vacant lieutenancy. Mr Postlethwaite is well known as an electrical engineer, and very great satisfaction is expressed by members at the fact of his services having been secured for the corps. It was decided that the Engineers’ bait should be held as usual this year, and the following sub-committee was appointed to carry out the arrangement—viz., the officers and Sergeants Roach and Barton, Lance-corporals Lacey and Thomson, Engineers Taylor, Grigg, Flynn, Bandsmen Painton and M‘Kinlay, Engineer T. A. Burt (secretary). On Friday evening last some preliminary instruction in field sketching was given to members preparatory to commencing a series of outdoor practices in this work. It is also intended to devote some time to instruction in range finding and m the use of the (service field level, one of these instruments being now in the possession of the corps. The officer commanding has received from Sergeant Morgan a very hocepiablo donation in' the shape of over twenty military works as an addition to' the fiorps’ library. The North Dunedin Rifles mustered at the (hill lull, Water of Leith, last eveniug, for inspection. The following was the parade State :—Captain Myers, Lieutenants Johnson and Slovvlcy, 1 oolor.sergeant, 4 sergeants, 1 bugler, and 46 rank and file ; total °n parade, 55. After inspection Sergeant(najor Castle instructed the company in the Oevv bayonet and firing exercises. A match, members v. ex-members, has been arranged h> be fired at Pelichet Bay range on Saturday afternoon next, and as there are several well-known shots amongst the ex-members a close und interesting match may be ex-, pected. The ex-members’ team will be in charge of ex-Lieutenant F. Pell.
