Ministers are extremely reticent as to the Financial Statement, and nothing definite has leaked out. It is, considered certain that Air Reid will propose the abolition of all Sir 0. R. Dihbs’s ad mlorern duties, and probably the whole tariff of the late Ministry will be swept away with the exception of the grain duties, which will remain for a time. The reimposition of a 3d duty on tea is among the strong probabilities, and there is also some likelihood of duties on sugar, candles, and biscuits being retained. It is not known whether the income and land tax will be M or Id in the £, but the former is considered probable, If Sir Henry Parkes takes action regarding the Budget, it will be to move a motion in the shape of a general expression that the financial proposals of the Government are unsatisfactory. By this means he might, hope to capture the whole Protection party, the extreme Freetraders, and a section of the Labor party. It is considered that he’ would have a better chance of upsetting the Government by these tactics than would Sir G. E. Dibbs by moving a direct vote of want of confidence. Should the Government be defeated, it is intended to ask for an immediate appeal to the country.

In the Legislative Assembly the Premier, in reply to a question, said he would not communicate with the Secretary of State for the Colonies with reference to filling the vacant Governorship and ask the sanction of the Crown to stn arrangement for extending the term of ActingGovernor indefinitely, '
