THE NEW INSURANCE BUILDING.

We understand that the contract for the erection of the Government Life Insurance building!!, at the corner of Princes and Rattray streets, has been signed by the contractors (M‘Leod and Shaw, of Invercargill), aitd that the work of pulling down the old building will commence almost immediately. The cost is about £13,000. M'Leod and Shaw return to Invercargill tomorrow to arrange for a supply of granite from Ruapuke Island, which is to be used for the base course and piers. The piers are to be in one piece of stone, 10ft long, and will weigh about five tons, and are to be polished. The remainder of the first storey will be of selected Waikawa stone, and the other two stories of the superstructure will be of Totara stone, No. 1 quality. The contractors have undertaken to complete the building in twelve months. This is the first building in the colony on which Ruapuke stone has been used.
