SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

TAHUNA PARK TROTS,

■ The following handicaps in connection with the Tahuna Part meeting on the 23rd inst. were declared by Mr Dowse at noon to-day;—

TURF CHIT CHAT.

[By The Admiral.]

The annual race fixture at Ettrick is to he discontinued, owing to the local club being prohibited for the future from availing themselves of the advantages of the totalisatcr. Ettrick was one of the meetings “wiped out” by the conference under Sir R. Stout’s Gaming Bill so far as the use of the machine was concerned.

Waiuku, the winner of the Thompson Handicap, would seem to have a particularly rosy chance of annexing (,he Winter Oats Handicap of one mile and a-half at the Wanganui meeting on the 24th iuat. He has been weighted at 7.11, and the programme does not stipulate for penalties for his Wellington victories. The English raping iq now in full swing. The first of the “ classic ” events was decided last Wednesday—viz., the Two Thousand Guineas—which was wdr by Kirkconoel (by Royal Hampton— §weet Sauce), with Mr Houlds wort h’s Laverno (by Bend Or—N apole) and Lord Rosebery’s Sir Visto (by Barcaldiue—Vista) in the other situations. Kirkconnel as a two-year-old won the Bedford Two-year-old Plate, five furlongs, at Newmarket ; the July Stakes, run over the new T.Y.C., at Newmarket; and the Lavant Stakes, five furlongs, at Goodwood. He also finished third in the New Stakes at Ascot, third to Speedwell and Keelson in the Middle Park Plate, and second to Raconteur in the Dewhurst Plato. During his two • year - old career Kirkconnel was owned by Mr W. Cooper, an exAustralian. Last December, however, he was offered at public auction, and was bought by Sir J. Blundell Maple at 5,000g5. He was probably ridden in the race by J. Watts, and he was trained by Day, who quite recently superseded P. Peck as Sir J. Blundell Maple’s private trainer. Laverno, who is a full brother to that celebrated horse, Orvieto, did not race as a two-year-old, and Sir Visto only started twice. When half trained he finished unplaced in the Woodcote Stakes, and subsequently he defeated Float, Speedwell, and a large field in the Imperial (Kempton Park Great Breeders’ Produce) Stake, of 4,309 sovs, one mile. Mr M‘Calmout’s Raconteur (by St. Simon—Plaisantrie), the winter favorite for the Epsom Derby, was engaged in the race, but the cable does not say whether he started.

On Friday the One Thousand Guineas was decided, the winner turning up in Galeottia (by Galopin— Agave). This filly was bred by Mr A. W. Cox, and was sold as a yearling to a gentlemen who at one time lived in Australia, and who now races in England as “Mr Fairlie.” As a two-year-old Galeottia started on seven occasions, but only managed to win the Kempton Paik Two-year-old Plate. She, however, ran second to Kirkconnel in the Bedford Two-year-old Plate, at Newmarket, and second to Hopbine for the Whitsuntide Plate at Manchester. La Sargesse, who finished second, started thirteen times and won six races, her season’s winnings totalling £2,107. Gas, placed third, who is a three-quarter sister to Ladas, started five times without earning a winning bracket.

Gore races to-morrow. Stockfish should be dangerous in the Autumn Handicap, and Langley in the Flying. The Fiddler, winner of the Pony Handicap at the Plumpton trotting mating at Christchurch on Saturday, was driven by her owner, Miss Button, who received quite an ovation on returning to scale. She had, however, to run the gauntlet of a protest on the groqud that (fhe Fidcller galloped, but it was disallowed. Acceptances in connection with the May meeting at the Forbury are due on Friday next. My present fane os aie : Hurdles, Auroa and Strephon ; Birthday, Skirmisher and Outpost; Tradesmen’s, Lord Zetland and Barmby. THE A.J.O. MEETING. [Per Press Association.] SYDNEY, May 7.
