THE WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY

At the Police Court, Gisborne, yesteiday, Dunlop, Lewis, and Adair, three local shopkeepers, were charged under the Shops Act with opening their premises last Saturday. The points raised were the validity of the Borough Council’s . resolution appointing Saturday, the motion not having been in writing and signed by the mover and seconder, also whether the Council had power to revoke that resolution and appoint another day. This they have done, and Thursday has been very generally observed for the last tvo weeks. The magistrate reserved his decision. The Labor Department will wait until the Auckland shopkeepers have made a breach of the law by failing to close on Saturday, and will then prosecute under the new ‘ Gazette ’ notices.
