THE REGATTA
The Otago Regatta Committee met at Port Chalmers last evening and decided to continue the rowing events on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to the seven \ o tponed events there will be a maiden four-oared race (for a sweepstake, with added money) and a ladies' race, boys' race, and ships' gig race. These are open to all, and entries will be received until the start takes place. The first race will start at three o clock, and the band wiH be present; and, given calm weather, there should be a large attendance. Trains leave Dunedin at 1.15 and 2.30 p.m. The Matakana's protest against White Wings was dismissed, whereupon the objection to Muritai was withdrawn. The Committee upheld the protest lodged against the Tarawera's boat in the Ships' Gig Race, on the ground that it was not a proper ship's gig, and awarded first prize to the Poherua crew and second to Crusader.
At Reefton on the second day Regalia won the Hurdle Race, with Minerva second. Raven was winning, but fell and injured his rider, Lynch. Geraint beat Goodwood, the only other starter in the Memorial Stakes. Goodwood won the Boatman's Handicap. Handicapper Henry was in great form at Manawatu yesterday. The President's Handicap, of 200 sovs, one mile and a-quarter, was won by Irish Twist (8.6), who beat Rosefeldt (8.12) by half a head, with Princess May (6.13) third, almost even with Mr Douglas's mare. The time was 2min 12 l-ssec, and the dividend £2 19s. Ealmea (7.9) beat Au Revoir (9.8) on the post by a bare head in the Farewell Handicap, the mile taking lmin 45seo. There is a talk of reducing the Auckland Cup distance to one mile and three-quarters. Dexterina, who won the concluding event at the Lancaster Park Trotting meeting, had to nip the gauntlet of a protest on the ground of inconsistent running, which, after an exhaustive inquiry, was dismissed.
