PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN AMERICA.
Some interesting statistics are just published concerning the public libraries of America. The old State of Massachusetts c"omes first in rank with 212 free libraries, a total of 2,760,000 volumes, or 1,233 volumes for each 1,000 of the population ; while the nearest rival is New HamrSWiire, with fortytwo libraries, 175,000 books, or 464 books to each 1,000 of the population. The western State of Ilh'nois, which ranks third, Jjas forty-two libraries, but this gives onlyT3o volumes to each 1,000 people. In short? the old but small State of Massachusetts has more libraries than the six States ranking next to her. A curious feature of this "lead in libraries" is that Massachusetts has never received any large bequests ; indeed, in the list of individual gifts of 1,000,000d0l and over for public _ library purposes she does not appear. That "list may be worthy of record. Chicago leads with, two John Crerar, £600,000; W. N. Newberry, £400,000. New York : The Astor family, £400,000. Baltimore : George Peabody, £300,000; Enoch Pratt, Philadelphia : Dr James Rush, £300,000. Pittsburg : Andrew Carnegie, £220,000.
The Chinese wall is more than 1,200 miles long, generally over 30ft high and 24ft thick.
