LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The meeting of the Mornington School Committee on Thursday was attended by Messrs Sparrow (acting chairman), Arnold, Harvey, Joachim, Mearns, and Reynolds. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Webb, Horsburgh, and Clark. The question of the desirability of starting a penny savings bank in connection with the school was discussed, and Messrs Horsburgh and Harvey were deputed to make inquiries and report to next meeting. It was resolved that the fives court, which was taken down when the new school building was erected, should be re-erected. The Works "Committee reported that the playground had been recently relevelled and covered with gravel, and that the proposed asphalting would be attended to during the summer recess. The head-master reported that the number of pupils on the roll was 523, and the average attendance for last mouth 460. He mentioned that it was intended to have a sale of work at the end of the year, and probably a concert, which would be given by the school children, about the same time.
Mr J. L. Wilson, -of the ' New Zealand Herald,' has been elected chairman of the United Press Association in lieu of Mr Brett, of the Auckland 'Star,' who retires. MessrsG. Fenwick and E. W. Knowles were re-elected directors. A resolution was passed by the shareholders deploring the death of Mr H. Blundell, who had been a director of the Association from the beginning. Commemoration services were held in All Saints' Church on Thursday, it being the festival of All Saints and the dedication festival of the church. In the morning holy communion was celebrated at eight o'clock, and there was evensong at half-past seven, which was well attended, the Rev. E. P. Hood officiating as precentor. Following the latter service was ' A Sermon in Song,' consisting of oratorio selections and other sacred music, the commencement of which the Rev. A. It. Fitchett took occasion to refer to the terrible calamity which had befallen the colony in the loss of life by the wreck of the Wairarapa, and said he felt sure their prayerful sympathy would be with the relatives of those fellow-townsmen and colonists who had passed away in the tragic event. In recognition of the mournful occurrence the special hymn 'Days and momenta quickly flying' was sung, and at the close of the service th« Dead March in 'Saul' was
played by the organist. In the performance" of the sacred selections the choir had the assistance of Mrs Horsburgh, Miss Vivian, Mrs Millar, Miss Walker, Mr Blenkinsopp, and Mr Ibbotson. Noticeable among the items given were the chorus 'But as for His people,' the aria 'Salva nos Domine,' the anthem '0 Lord most holy,' and the* aria • Angels ever bright and fair.' Organ soloti were contributed by Mr J. Tirrtson with much taste.
The usual monthly meeting of tfie Port Chalmerß Volunteer Fire Brigade took placQ on Thursday ; present Captain Leach, Lieutenant Colthorpe, and ten members. After the usual routine business it was re< solved to send a letter of condolence to the widow of Mr Shakesby (late foreman of the brigade), and also to Foreman A..Smith, in their sad btreavements. It was further re« solved to send a letter to the manager of the Union Steam Ship Company thanking him for the handsome donation of £2O to the brigade's funds in recognition" of their services at the fire on board the s.B. Mararoa. A deputation was alsojormed to wait on the Fire Brigade Committee of Borough Council re removal of firebelh * Mr Albertson was elected senior foreman, and Mr W. Wilson foreman No. 2 reel. Onlv two sections of Crown lands were disposed of at the Dunedin office this week, viz.:—Section 5, block 12, Maliiototo, 195 acres, selected by James Hore, under lease in perpetuity, at 22s per acre ; and section 12, block 12, Maniototo, 253 acres, selected by George Murdoch, under lease in perpetuity, at 22s per acre. Cr Lionel Harris and Mr C. W. Luke are definitely out for the mayoralty of Wellington. * The usual fortnightly meeting ot the Loyal Dunedin Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the lodge room, 19 George street, on Thursday. A large number of members were present. N.G. Gillies occupied the chair. .During the evening G.M. Knox, on behalf of the lodge, presented P.G. Steedman with a handsome framed, and glazed certificate, in recognition of the able manner in which he had carried out his duties as G.M. P.G. Steedman suitably responded. G.M. Bremner, on behalf of Loyal Caversham Lodge» responded to the toast of the visitors. Receipts, £l3 23 sd. ■■ -
