CRIMINAL SITTINGS.

WANGANUr, September 25,

The Supreme Court criminal sittings were opened by the Chief Justice, Sir J. Prendergast, to-day. There were nineteen cases on the criminal calendar, nine on the civil, a divorce suit, a wife's petition for judicial separation, and two appeals from justices' decisions. Joshua Bason, charged with the theft of a watch, was found not guilty. R. W. Poole, for larceny, was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. No bills were found against G. H. Bcattjc, alleged forgery; Coleman, attempted shooting; theft from a dwelling. True bills were returned agaiust Finlayson, theft from the person; Ford, theft from a dwelling; Neary, malicious injury; and Morey, offences against the Bankruptcy Act, TIMARU, Setoempeb 25. At the Supreme Court to-day there was only one prisoner for trial, P. Costigan, for two misdemeanors under the Bankruptcy Act, and he was acquitted. He was, however, found guilty of failing to keep proper books, and sentenced to one month. INVERCARGILL, September 26. At the Supreme Court to-day His Honor Judge Williams sentenced Sarah Gregory, for concealment of birth, to three months' ftnpri|ioumen,t; and James Lurasden ' waß sentenced to eighteen mohths'imprisonnwtit for larceny.
