For the run this year forty-six entries have been received, or four more than last year. Out of this number I think fully thirty will face the starter, Mr Burk. Most of the competitors are old runners, there being only five or six who have not started in a, race like this before. M'Laren should be in about the best nick, after the steady manner in which he has trained right through the season for football, and I believe he will just about win. The men I fancy to fill up the other five places are Deaker, Neill, Low, Bauchop, and Barton.
Deaker, who, I hear, runs out to the mineral springs at the Taieri, has a drink, and runs back under three hours must have a big chance. I do not know whether the water has anything to do with it or not, but if it has I should advise him to call at Thomson's factory on his way to the Park on Saturday. Neill, who ran well in the long distance event at the last sports at Christ's College, and who is said to be a stayer, will also be among the first. Low, Bauchop, and Barton, on their last year's performances, will also be in it. Unless Jimmie Panloaf sends in his shilling before Saturday we shall have to draw on the Ladies' Dorcas Club for the amount. Amateur. The stallion Patriarch is dead. Lord Zetland, Goodwood, Barmby, Rosehill, and Aqualate arc the acceptors for the Geraldine Cup. Barton and Bennett, of the D.A.A. Club, have also entered for the cross-country run on Saturday. A start will be made from Tahuna Park at 3 o'clock, and the course to be covered is exactly the same as the ono marked out for last year's run. A Melbourne cablegram reports the death of Mr Martin Loughlin, the well-known sportsman of Ballarat. Mr Barnard's imported retrievers are coming by steamer from Lyttelton tomorrow, ex quarantine.
