A YEAR’S RECORD OF LYNCHINGS.
The ‘ Chicago Tribune ’ has been keeping a record of lynchings. In the year 1893 200 persona suffered deaths by such violence. “Of these 30 were whites, 5 Mexicans, 7 Indians, and 150 negroes—4 of them women. The number is 1 less than was reported for 1892. The crimes charged against those lynched were rape, 52; murder, 57 ; incendiarism, 8; and the rest miscellaneous crimes. This brings up the, list to about 2,000 negro men and women who are known to have been shot, hanged, or burned to death by mobs during the last twelve years.” A few of these lynchings occurred in the West. The great majority of them constitute a fearful arraignment of our Southern civilisation. And what is the remedy ? It can only be found in the elevation of both the white man and the negro. Neither the negro nor the white man lias outgrown the standard of morals which was set by slavery. It will take some time yet to wipe out the ccpse of the old system, with its lawless disrespect for human life and liberty,
