SERIOUS ASSAULT.

A very serious assault was committed last night on a man named Herbert Charles Neville, of the Empire Restaurant. He was proceeding along Elder street, near Joel's Brewery, when, it is alleged, he was waylaid and struck on the head with a "neddy"" Neville is being attended by Dr Coughtrey, and lies in a very precarious condition. Chief-detective Henderson and Detective M'Grath soon set to work, and arrested a young man named Robert Hickling this afternoon. Accused will be brought before the Court to-morrow morning.
