The Invercargill, with cargo from Invercargill, arrived at the Rattray street wharf at 1.30 a.m. yesterday. The barque Alcestis, having completed the discharge of her eargo, was shifted over to the Jetty street wharf this morning. The ship Euterpe commenced discharging cargo at the cross wharf to-day. The Napier arrived at the Rattray street wharf at 3.30 a.m. yesterday with cargo from Fortrose. She left again this afternoon for Riverton. The schooner Isabella Anderson is discharging cargo at the Rattray street wharf. The barque Opawa is expected to be all clear of cargo to-morrow. _ The Herald, from Greymouth via the Bluff, arrived at 8.45 p.m. yesterday, and commenced this morning to discharge her part cargo of coal into the hulks at the Bowen pier. She left the Bluff early yesterday morning. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company s barque Lam stone is getting on well with her loading for London, having now onboard 2,912 bales wool and skins and 800 cases of preserved meats. The s.s. Matatua is meeting quick despatch with the discharge of her cargo at the Victoria wharf. The s.s. Penguin left the Rattray street wharf this afternoon with passengers and cargo for the North. Luring the week ended May 0 the following vessels had been at the Dunedin wharves:— Arrivals: Invercargill 123 tons (twice), Manapouri 1,020, Thomas and Henry 212 (twice), Wailiora 1,209, Opawa 1,076, Brunner 332, Jessie Niccol93, Marmion 92, Napier 48 (twice), Matatua 2,190, Penguin 442, Euterpe 1,179, Isabella Anderson 79 ; total, 8,538 tons. Departures : Rotorua 576 tons, Napier 48 (twice), Invercargill 123, Thomas and Henry 212 (twice), Manapouri 1,020, Wailiora 1,269, Brunner 332; total, 3,840 tons. The ship Torridon, from Sydney, arrived at London on February 24, and repprted that on December 9 she saw two icebergs in latitude 52deg S., longitude 140deg W.; on the 10th large quantities of ice north and south, some of the bergs well in sight after running twenty miles by log, sea covered with patches of white, frothy-looking substance and drift ice all over. She continued in this field of ice till December 14, Sidcg S., 125dcg W., the last berg seen hearing south at noon that day. . The Lillian Morris, from Iquiqui, arrived at Falmouth on February 28, and reported: —December 24, 43dcg S., 40dcg W„ sighted five icebergs and a quantity of small ice. The largest berg was about two miles long and 500 ft high, with a deep buy in one side. It appeared to be as solid as when it left the Antarctic regions. After darkness set in the vessel grazed along a piece which was floating low in the water. Fortunately the sea was smooth, or it would have done damage to her side. The Tarawera made the run from Otago Heads to Lyttelton Heads last week in a trine under fourteen hours, and made an equally good trip from Lyttelton to Wellington. The Peninsular and Oriental Company have contracted with Sir Raylton Dixon and Co., of Middlesborough, for a steamer of 6,000 tons to be fitted in every way similar to the s.s. Aden, built for them by the company two years ago, and which has proved a highly successful vessel.
ARRIVAL OF THE TONGARIRO,
The Tongariro, one of the New Zealand Company’s fine steamers, and which has been converted into a cargo boat for the time being, arrived this afternoon from London via Auckland, Napier, and Wellington, and was berthed alongside the George street pier to take in cargo for London. The Tongariro is commanded by Captain I l '. Mayoss, R.N.H., who has associated with him the following officers Chief, Mr Croucher ; second, Mr Giles; third, Mr Fisk; fourth, Mr Wortley ; chief engineer, Mr Relf; steward in charge, Mr R. G. Blackwell. The Tongariro left London at 6.17 a.m. on February 28, and experienced a strong S.W. gale down Channel. After clearing the Channel experienced fine 1119 derate weather till within two days of Teneriffe, when heavy south to south-easterly weather and sea were encountered, which lasted till after leaving Teneriffe at 9 p.m. on March 7, after a stay there of llh 24min. After a generally fine passage, passing Cape Verde at 4.55 a.m. on the 12th, crossing the Equator in 9deg W. longitude ou the morning of the 6th, and having experienced moderate S.E. trade, was signalled off Cape Town at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 26, and rounded the Cape of Good Hope the same evening. The easting was disposed of in 50deg and 51deg S. latitude, the weather during the whole time being generally moderate, with the wind from all points and much dull weather. Ice was fallen in with between the parallels of 47dcg and 50deg S. latitude, and the 48deg and 61deg meridians of E. longitude, in the shape of a few isolated bergs at considerable intervals. Dense fog was encountered in the southern part of the Tasman Sea. and arrived at Auckland at 7 a.m. on April 22, after a passage of 52d llh : discharged cargo and left again on the 26th ; called at Napier and Wellington, leaving the latter port at 6.45 p.m. on the sth inst., and arrived as above.
SUPPOSED LOSS OF THE CPvEST OF THE WAVE.
Inveucakuill, May 7.—Anxiety is felt as to the safety of the locally-owned schooner Crest of the Wave, which loft Timaru for the Bluff on the 19th April, and was in the company of the ketch Gatlin off Otago Heads when the storm came on. The latter took shelter at the Nuggets, but the Crest went on, and nothing more has been heard of her. The Catlin has since arrived at Invercargill.
