LICENSING MEETINGS.

The Kaikorai Licensing Committee granted Mr Robert Houlstou’s application for a renewal of the license of the Commercial Hotel, Green Island ; and adjourned for a fortnight that of Mr J. Ross of the Kaikorai Junction Hotel

At the Timaru meeting the Rev. W. Gillies (Prohibitionist), who had become a member of the Committee since last sitting, was present in court, but took no part in the proceedings. After a conference in Srivate, all the licenses were renewed. Mr illies publishes a strong protest, which he handed to the chairman of the Committee, against the granting of all licenses without the exercise oi *‘ discretion.” He says that not being allowed to speak in public he expressed his dissent of the proceedings by sitting a* oo *- Four licenses in»North-west Ward of the City of Christchurch were renewed this morning, and one was adjourned for a report as to the accommodation for boarders. „ The s Wellington Licensing Bench refused applications for midnight licenses,. but granted all licenses up to eleven o’clock, except in six oases. 01 the latter, the Queen’s, Branch, Star, and Cricketers’ Arms were adjourned for a week, the police reporting that the bouses were frequented by persons of ill-repute. The Panama Hotel was also adjourned for a week, the applicant not residing on the premises. The r Bench intimated they were determined that licensees should reside, on the premises. The application of the Wellington Hotel was also adjourned for a week owmg to the intemperate habits of the licensee.
