THE COURSING MEETING.
It was half-past four yesterday before the final course in the first round of the Oaks was got off'. An improvement was made in the programme by the printing of the conditions under which the points scored in a course are shown. The layers of the odds had the best of the deal all through, but in two instances —the Auckland-bred Snowdrop, owned by an Oamaru resident, in the Cup, and Master Mariner in the Derby—the favorites were badly beaten. The following is the result of the first round of the OAKS.—Unlimited number of bitch puppies ut£2 each. Winner .£lB, runner-up £!i, two dogs at £2 10s each. Scanlan and Swan’s Mermaid beat E. it. Bonntree’s t'lorrie. A, T. Price's Sillwood beat J. Thompson’s Briar Bose. S. S. .Myers's Starry Night beat J. Thompson’s Evorton Lass. W. Winchester’s Watercress heat C. Binding's Pine beauty. S. S. .Myers's Break o’ Day heat J. Urunnn's Tempest. * J. Cooper's Pupauui heat J. Anderson's Knowdorina. B. Blackham's Midge beat W. Winchester’s Lady Zetland. W. Gardiner's Musket Lass beat A. Bills's Flywheel. Mermaid (5 to 2 on) led up from Florric, and always had the best of a course in which neither dog showed to advantage. After an undecided Sillwood (3 to 2 on) had a slight advantage over Briar Rose in the run up ; and in working the hare Starry Night (2 to 1 on) fell when holding a commanding lead, but was quickly on her feet again, and, obtaining possession, ran up a good score before puss escaped. Watercress (2 to 1 on) led to the hare and scored in the exchanges. Break o’ Day (3 to 2 on) beat Tempest pointless. I’apanui (2 to 1 on) outpaced iSuowdoriua and did the better work. Lady Zetland (2 to I on) led up from Midge, but after getting the initial points went lame, and allowed the favorite to run up a decent score before the hare escaped. Musket Lass (2 to 1 on) scored over Flywheel at all points of the game.
