The Committee of the Ashburton Racing Club carried the following resolution, a copy of which tlii! secretary was instructed to soiitl to all racing clubs in the South Island and ask thorn to appoint delegates to attend a conference to be held at Ashburlon on •Inly •"> to discuss tin; matter -''That the Ashburton I'acing Club consider that the time has arrived to form an association of country clubs, and that all bona fide country clubs throughout the South Island be asked by circular io join and generally help forward the association for the following reasons: (1) That it is desirable that New Zealand racing should be governed l>y a representative' body or bodies, and not as at present by unrepresentative ; ( - J) that country clubs should be represented at conferences held for the purpose of framing rules and considering matters connected with the welfare of racing in New Zealand generally ; (.'{) that under the present ruling the very existence of some of the oldest and best country clubs whose meetings largely assist to maintain sport is seriously jeopardised, and :i continuation of this undesirable state of affairs will have the effect of encouraging proprietary chilis; (4) that country clubs being associated would be in a better position to further the interests of racing in general."
