The ' Financial Times ’ applauds the decision of the Victorian Government to prosecute Sir M. Davies and other directors and officials of the Mercantile Bank of Australia. The authorities in Scotland Yard have been entrusted with the execution of a warrant for the arrest of Milledge, late manager of the Mercantile Bank of Australia, (Per Press Association,] MELBOURNE, January 6. (Received January 6,1898, at noon.) Those whom the Government have decided to prosecute in connection with the false balance-sheet of the Mercantile Bank of Australia have informed the authorities of their whereabouts, and will be summoned on a criminal charge. The date of the trial is fixed for the 11th inst., but it is probable that the prosecution will be delayed until the arrival of Milledge from London.
