Mr Alexander Crawford, Government inspector of machinery, died at an early hour this morning at his residence, Edward street, St. Clair. He was, we believe, a Greenock man; at any rate he served his apprenticeship there, with the firm of Campbell, M’Nab, and Clark, As a young man ho went to California, and afterwards resided in Victoria, from which colony he came to New Zealand in the tag Lioness, at the time when Hokitika was the attraction for miners. Subsequently Mr Crawford was engineer on the p.s, Peninsula, trading in Otago Harbor, and then he went to sea in the Beautiful Star and the Maori, leaving the last-named vestel to accept the Government situation offered him through the late Mr Nanoarrow. Mr Crawford was a careful and competent inspector, and much respected by all business men with whom he came into contact. Re leaves a large family.

The Royal Comic Opera Company gave their second and final production of * Dorothy ’ at the Princess’s Theatre last night in the presence of a very large attendance. The performance was received by the audience in a way that showed that they heartily appreciated the efforts of those who took part in it, Miss Young, Mies Pollard, Miss Varley, Mr Lauri, and Mr Deane being specially favored, the lastmentioned receiving a rapturous recall, which was well deserved, for his capital singing of ‘Queen of my heart.’ To-night ‘The Yeoman of the Guard’ will be produced for the first time, The City Hall was fairly well attended last night when Mr Sidney Colville gave another of his amusing entertainments. His character sketches evoked loud applause. Miss Meritt’s vocal selections were listened to with much pleasure, and the performance of the cockatoo again excited the admiration of the audience. To-night Mr Colville and his company make their last appearance, and those who have not seen them should certainly avail themselves of this opportunity, for the entertainment is really worth patronising. Professor Dudley, of Tasmania, who has a wide reputation ss an excellent ventriloquist and clever conjurer, will assist at to-night’s performance.
