TURF CHIT-CHAT. [Bt The Admiral ] Daydream and the hunter Selim were shipped to England from Lyttelton by the Arawa. Highborn changed hands at L 1,200, Destination, India. “ Granbrook ” (in the ‘ Sportsman ’) suggests that Marvel’s name should be altered to Inconsistency. Mr John Grazier’s Fnlham won the Goodwood Handicap at Adelaide on the 23rd ult, In the breeding wdrld, the birth of an own brother to the mighty Ormonde is (writes a recent London paper) the most interesting event of the week, The colt is said to be a very fine foal. Mr J. Timpany, of Fortress, purchased Dmdenong (by Bnndoora) and Reflection (by Tasman—Moonray) when in Christchurch the other day. It is Mr Timpany’s intention to train on the Wyndbam course. A blackfellow, recently charged at Narabi (N.S.W.) with putting a log on the railway line, explained that be wanted to see if the train would jump it. He knew it was fast on the flat, but he wished to find out if it was a steeplechaser! A pony (12 hands 2in) was recently matched in England to trot fifteen miles in an hour. The little follow won with eighteen seconds to spare, and without making one break in the whole journey. Satisfactory acceptances have been received for the Ashburton meeting to-morrow. I fancy that Saracen will win the Ashburton Stakes, that Liberator will follow up bis Titnaru successes by annexing the Autumn Handicap, that Glenlora will account for the Novel Race, and that Young Cheviot will require a deal of beating in the Flying Handicap. Mr Henry Howells, who is almost the father of racing in Southland, has resigned office as handioapper to the Southland Racing Club, a body which he was instrumental in establishing. His resignation was received with regret, and it was unanimously decided to elect him a life member of the club. A committee was also appointed to arrange for making a suitable presentation to Mr Howell in recognition of the valuable services he has rendered to racing iu Southland, and of the interest he has taken in the club.
