FOOTBALL GOSSIP.
[Bv Rkpkbbk.]
The Committee of the Rugby Union met last evening, and appointed a match committee for the season. May the selections prove as judicious as they did last season, when there was not a single voice raised in protest against the choice of our interprovincial representatives. W. T. Macpherson, the crack amateur eprinter of Sydney, has been elected captain of the Randwick Football Clnb.
Mr E. T. Hoben, organiser of the New Zealand Rugby Union, has joined the reporting staff of the ‘ Evening Post.’ I hear that the managing body of the O.R.F.U. have decided to offer liberal terms to the Taranaki Union to play a match here, provided the visitors meet Otago in the first instance. Convenient dates would bo: Dunedin, Saturday ; Invercargill, Tuetday ; Christchurch, Saturday; Wellington and Wairarapa to follow on the homo trip. At the very outset of the season I predict that the Alhambra boys will again prove the premier dab, and that Kaikorai will be their toughest opponents. Torrance's backs will be up to the mark this season, but they require a couple more heavy forwards. If Caradua joins them, Duncan will probably be played as a three-quarter. 1 am pleased to hear that the ' Annual ’ is well underway, and that it will be in the hands of subscribers before the end of the month. Tho last “ copy,” in the shape of the season’s fixtures, is now in the bauds of the printer. Some eighteen months ago the Kaikorai Club purchased five and a-quarter acres of ground at the rear of Bishopscourt and Balance wen township as a football ground. The conditions provided that the purchase money should extend over five years, and the club, having paid the deposit and the first year’s interest, now find themselves hampered for the want of funds. It is therefore proposed to float the ground into a company, and the prospectus will be placed before the club members on Thursday night. Seeing that the Rugby Union have a substantial credit balance, 1 think that their managing body might aid in the formation of another football ground by taking up a number of shares. It is absolutely necessary that the land should be fenced quickly, in which case it will bo available for playing purposes next season, The ground is admirably adapted for a football field.
